Paediatric (children's) nurse practitioners

* If your child has a minor injury you can get treatment for them at the Shiremoor Resource Centre instead of unnecessarily going to Accident and Emergency

* Paediatric nurse practitioners treat children and young people who have a minor injury

About the service

Paediatric nurse practitioners (PNPs) provide a range of services to children and young people. The service was developed to provide an alternative to accident and emergency for children with minor injuries.

Minor injuries include:

  • cuts and grazes
  • sprains and strains
  • bites and stings (including human and animal bites)
  • skin infections
  • minor head injuries without vomiting and / or loss of consciousness
  • eye problems, such as minor eye infections/ conjunctivitis
  • objects in the ear or nose which have become stuck
  • impetigo (this a contagious bacterial infection of the skin)
  • ring removal

Please note that we do not provide a dressing change service or wound check service. This should be provided through your GP practice.

How can I access the service?

Paediatric nurse practitioner services are available at the Shiremoor Resource Centre.

If you child has a minor injury then you are able to “walk in” and wait to be seen. Please use the list above for examples of minor injuries that we treat. If you are unsure as to whether your child has an injury or an ailment please contact the Shiremoor Resource Centre on 0191 297 9000.

The clinic operates Monday to Friday 9.30am – 5pm and is for patients registered with GPs in North Tyneside. If you need to register with a GP you need to contact a GP practice close to where you live and let them know that you wish to register.
