Emergency care practitioners (ECPs) are highly skilled practitioners who provide a range of services both in the community and at the Shiremoor Resource Centre where the team is based.
The team was established to prevent unnecessary admissions to hospital and to provide an alternative to attending accident and emergency. The specialised training emergency care practitioners (ECPs) undetake, allows them to see and treat a range of minor injuries and prescribe medications to treat a variety of conditions.

Minor injuries clinic
You can often be treated much quicker at a minor injuries clinic than at A&E if your injury is minor. Please see the list below for examples of the types of minor injuries we can treat at the minor injuries clinic. Please note: this is a walk in service so no appointments are necessary.
This clinic is based at the Shiremoor Resource Centre, it operates between 10am – 6pm, Monday to Friday not including bank holidays. You can contact the Minor injuries clinic on 0191 2536966.
Examples of the types of injuries patients can be treated for at a minor injuries clinic:
- Skin infections
- Allergic reactions
- Falls – minor injuries, lacerations
- Back pain – acute, musculoskeletal
- Minor injuries
- Wounds
- Bruising
- Swelling
- Cuts
- Sprains
- Minor eye conditions
- Stings/insect bites
- Ring removal
- Foreign bodies in noses or ears
Please by aware that the minor injuries clinic does not provide a dressing service or a wound check service. These services are provided by your GP practice.
In the community
Emergency care practitioners visit patients in their own homes who have been referred to them via a range of pathways. Referrals for home visits will be made via your GP practice or the ambulance service.
Nursing homes
Nursing homes in North Tyneside are able to contact the ECP service directly and request visits for their clients. This service helps to prevent frail and vulnerable people having to attend the A&E department.
The community service and the nursing homes service both operate 7 days a week 7am to 7pm.
