Community health development

* Childhood obesity is higher than the national average in North Tyneside - just over 15% of children are clinically obese

* Obesity is linked to range of health problems including heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes

About the service

The health development service aims to make healthy choices easier choices for local people to make. Health development is an over arching term encompassing a range of activities designed to improve health and reduce inequalities in health across the whole of North Tyneside.

Community health development encourages communities to identify their own health agenda and then assists them in developing strategies to create positive ways of addressing health issues.

By encouraging genuine participation in the communities’ agenda local people become more empowered. As people become a part of the decision making process they then become more willing to consider change because the impetus for change has come from within their own community.

The community health development unit is comprised of:

  • Health promotion specialists
  • Community development workers
  • Public health nurse team
