Local area agreement

Organisations across the borough are signed up to work together on the local area agreement, which focuses on key concerns in the borough and promises financial rewards if targets are met.ntsp flower

Local area agreements (LAAs) are in operation across the country.  The area (in this case, ‘North Tyneside’) negotiates with central government on a range of targets to address national and local priorities, improving conditions and services for residents.  Some of these are specified by government, but others are at the discretion of the local area. North Tyneside’s LAA has been developed by the North Tyneside strategic partnership (NTSP).

Included in the agreement are clear targets relating to health, crime, children and young people, employment, enterprise, housing, transport, fire safety and the environment.  Ten of these carry financial rewards totalling up to £6.2million if they are fully achieved by 2010.

For the targets carrying financial rewards, NTSP partners chose to focus on four priorities which emerged from public consultation as being of concern, or where North Tyneside needs to improve:

  • Reducing smoking and obesity
  • Reducing the harm caused by alcohol
  • Helping those with a history of worklessness into work
  • Creating safe places and spaces for children and young people to play or meet together
  • North Tyneside Council will lead on the safe places and spaces targets and the primary care trust on the smoking, obesity and alcohol targets.
