About North Tyneside PCT
North Tyneside Primary Care Trust (PCT) is responsible for commissioning health care services for the borough’s 197,331 residents.
We make sure that people can access services such as GPs, district nursing, hospital treatment, mental health services, screening programmes, dentists, pharmacists and opticians.
In North Tyneside there are 29 general practices, 30 dental practices, 52 community pharmacies and 20 optical practices.
We plan and commission primary and community health care services, and secondary care and specialist services.
In line with the national policy, Transforming Community Services, we transferred our community staff to Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation trust on 1 April 2011.
Our main providers of services are Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Trust and North East Ambulance Service NHS Trust.
We also have a preventative role to improve the general health of the local population and to reduce the likelihood of people becoming ill. This involves raising awareness of health issues, running health improvement initiatives and encouraging local residents to take better care of themselves.
We have shared management arrangements with Newcastle PCT and Northumberland Care Trust. This means there is one chief executive and one executive team working across the three organisations. The integrated management arrangement is called NHS North of Tyne.
Our main headquarters are based at Bevan House, Newcastle Great Park.
We are one of 12 primary care organisations in the North East and we work into the North East Strategic Health Authority, which is our link to the Department of Health and national policy making. We also work closely with our local hospital trusts, mental health trust and ambulance service, our local authority North Tyneside Council and the community and voluntary sector.
